Module 3:

Vocal Comping, cleaning and Editing

Once the vocal recordings are complete, it's time to get to work! The first step is to choose the best vocal takes and to 'comp' a complete and final vocal ready for mixing. This module will explore comping techniques used by the pros, as well as an in-depth look and the tools and techniques required to 'clean' vocal recordings so they sound pristine.

Specifically, this module will take a look at:

  • How to 'comp' a vocal from multiple takes to create a brilliant final vocal take

  • Cleaning and editing out noises such as pops, clicks, mouth clicks, hum, and hiss

  • Dealing with plosives

  • Dealing with harsh sounding breaths

  • Restoring and improving poorly recorded vocals

  • Removing room 'reverb' from vocals that have been recorded in an untreated room.

Module 4:

Vocal tuning, AutoTune and alignment

Modern records feature vocals that have been fine-tuned for many years. In fact, music fans' ears are so used to hearing perfectly tuned vocals that it's almost compulsory to now tune your vocal recordings. This module will go deep into the technicalities of vocal tuning and alignment. You will hear first hand how this can significantly improve the quality of your vocal recordings.

Specifically, this module will cover:

  • An in-depth overview of how to fine-tune vocals in Melodyne, including multiple vocal layers

  • How to use AutoTune for both tuning and effects purposes

  • How to align multiple vocals so they are perfectly in time with each other, using traditional editing techniques from within your DAW and using timing correction software such as Melodyne and SyncroArts VocAlign

It was beyond valuable to learn new techniques and even re-learn some fundamentals I'd forgotten about mixing and mastering. I've been implementing her teaching into every project since taking the course and my clients couldn't be happier with quality of my productions. Thanks Aubrey”

“I learnt things in producing and mixing that I never knew existed! I am so pleased I found Aubrey and her courses because I’m able to learn online with a really energetic and warm producer/teacher and my skills have sky rocketed. I have just bypassed years of learning in 6 weeks”

Steven Jackson

"I took Aubrey's Mixing and Mastering Course and it was outstanding! I learned a lot from the entire course but what stood out to me was how she took one of the most complex and misunderstood subjects of mixing (Compression) explained and demonstrated it in the most clear and concise way I have ever seen. She makes it all so clear. A true worthwhile course".
